The camera on Holes Bay Road, affectionately nicknamed "Bastard" by local motorists, was found yesterday morning in its usual position. Motorists were shocked at the sight. Canford Heath resident James Trafford was one of the first to discover the body: "I went past the camera at my usual 70 mph. Every morning, the camera used to greet me with its trademark two flashes, but today I got nothing. I had to turn around and run back through the other way, but I still couldn't get him to respond. It was then I called 999."
After arresting Mr Trafford for flouting his driving ban, police pulled a sheet over Bastard and started searching the area. A police spokesman said, "We don't know the cause of death yet. This speed camera is loved by everyone who passes by, and we are all horrified by the loss."
The camera's father, Poole Council, gave a brief statement to the Bubble, saying: "It's very sad isn't it? Now if you'll excuse me, I have some clothes to burn."
