In a statement issued via his assistant, Waylon Smithers, Mr Burns said that there was nothing wrong with visiting the country, which is now plagued by civil unrest: "I've had enough of this tittle-tattle. As an MP under a Conservative Prime Minister, I've had plenty of experience of being somewhere the majority of people hate the governement. Now get off my property. Smithers, release the hounds..."
I was saying 'Booo-urns'
But civil rights groups condemned the MP visiting the small nation. Mary Flay, of the Bournemouth Civil Rights Association said: "It's quite shocking that an MP of our government would go to such an undemocratic country and get everything paid for him by the blood of the people. I know I didn't say anything last year when he made the trip, but, let's be honest, no-one knew or even cared what government Bahrain had until they had those riots."
Senior Conservatives, however, hit back at the remarks, saying: "We fully support Mr Burns' decision to visit Bahrain last year. He is in charge of the all-party parliamentary group about Bahrain, and would be doing quite a crap job if he never went there. Besides, if MPs avoided going to countries where there was conflict, then we'd probably all be living in Switzerland."
"Mind you, at least we'd all be closer to our money."
