Council will help Japan by 'removing top floor of reactor'

BOURNEMOUTH Council yesterday offered assistance to Japanese authorities at the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant by suggesting it solve all the problems by demolishing the top floor of the No 1 reactor, replacing it with a roof terrace. Spokesperson for Bournemouth Council, Jane McEnery, said that while the council had little experience of nuclear reactors, it did know how to fix buildings that no-one wants to go near: "We think that in the current climate, demolishing Fukushima 1 would be a total waste of money. Instead, we propose merely removing the top part of the reactor building, and replacing it with a terrace. Then, in five or six years time, we can demolish the whole thing. Our accountants have calculated that it is, apparently, cheaper to demolish something one and a half times than just the once."

Supporters of the scheme, who are all council officials, say that it would really regenerate the area, allowing local residents to appreciate the sea views: "The opportunity of this redevelopment will really improve the local people's opinion of the power station, as well as give us a better relationship with people we can buy electricity off."

Not everyone was supportive of the scheme. Gameko Kanimoto, a worker at the plant, did not agree with the council's vision. During a phone call with council chiefs, he was reported to have sworn and screamed down the phone at them, demanding they did not call him at this time. "I have other things to worry about right now, go away", he was reported to have said.

McEnery said: "We think they will love our ideas."
